Australia’s campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 came to an unexpected halt as they failed to make it past the Super Eight stage. Despite a strong start in the tournament, they faced a do-or-die match against India following a surprising defeat to Afghanistan.

In the pivotal match against India, Rohit Sharma’s explosive innings of 92 runs off just 41 balls set the tone, putting Australia on the back foot. Sharma’s remarkable display included 29 runs off a single over bowled by Mitchell Starc, featuring four sixes and a four.

Reflecting on this moment, Starc praised Sharma’s exceptional form and tactical approach. “I’ve played against him many times. He had an outstanding tournament, especially towards the end,” Starc said on the Willow Talk podcast with Adam Peacock and Brad Haddin. “He utilized the wind in St Lucia brilliantly. There was one end that was much more favorable for hitting, and he took full advantage of it.”

Starc acknowledged that his over against Sharma was decisive. “I bowled five bad balls, and he hit them all for six.”

Although Starc managed to dismiss Sharma just eight runs shy of a century, the damage had been done. India set a formidable target of 206 runs. Travis Head’s aggressive 76 off 43 balls gave Australia hope, but Jasprit Bumrah’s timely breakthrough shifted the momentum, and Australia fell short by 24 runs.

“We thought the target was close to par, maybe a bit over. It was the best pitch we played on in the tournament, probably the quickest,” Starc explained. “It was definitely chaseable. We were on track for a while, but a few hiccups and some quality bowling from India set us back.”

Australia’s journey was derailed further by a loss to Afghanistan, who secured a 23-run victory. Reflecting on this, Starc pinpointed misreading the conditions and underwhelming fielding as key factors. “Our fielding was below par throughout the tournament,” he admitted. “We didn’t play our best cricket in the last two games, and that cost us.”

Starc watched from the sidelines against Afghanistan as Ashton Agar was included to exploit spin-friendly conditions. Although initially unhappy about being left out, Starc understood the tactical decision. “It was about the match-up. Spin had been effective on that ground in St Vincent. Ash bowled well in the Powerplay, but Afghanistan played spin better and assessed the conditions more effectively.”

In the end, Starc credited Afghanistan for their smart cricket and Australia’s inability to capitalize on key moments. “They played the better cricket on the day. We had a few stumbles that ultimately cost us.”

Australia’s early exit was a tough pill to swallow, but Starc’s reflections indicate a team determined to learn from their mistakes and come back stronger.
